Malaria, a major parasitic disease, is a significant cause of morbidity and death in tropical countries (White, 1996), and also the main cause of anemia in endemic areas (White, 2018). It can have severe complications such as cerebral malaria, severe anemia, respiratory distress, and renal failure (Blaser & Dolin, 2015).

Globally, about 2,000 people die of malaria every day, and most of them are children in Africa (White et al., 2014). This disease had an estimated 241 million cases in 2020, and an increase in case incidence from 56 cases per 1000 population in 2019, to 59 cases per 1,000 population in 2020 (World Malaria Report, 2021).

Also, African countries like Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Mozambique, Angola, and Burkina Faso accounted for about 55% of global cases of malaria in 2020 (World Malaria Report 2021).

Individual and community malaria preventive measures include:

  • Vector control
  • Deployment and use of insecticide-treated bed nets
  • Prompt and accurate diagnosis
  • Appropriate use of effective anti-malarial drugs (White et al., 2014).
  • Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) (done during the rainy season for children aged 3–59 months) (Ward et al., 2022).

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to when malaria preventive vaccine will be available to all, particularly to under 5 children.

But before then, let me enjoy my insecticide-treated net.
